Khikhani Fortress

Date: XII-XIII centuries

Khikhani Fortress: has a particular importance. It is situated at the source of the Skhalta-Khikhanistskali rivers at the Ajara-Shavsheti border, 2635 m above sea level. The Khikhani Fortress was built by eristavt-eristavi (Duke-of-Dukes) Tbel Abuseridze. The fortress dates to the twelfth-thirteenth centuries. It is built on one hectare plot of land and is decorated with four towers. The walls contain watch holes. The fortress also has the remains of some buildings including a bakery, wine cellar, and church. A well has also been preserved to this day.
