Location: 346 km to the east of Batumi

Mtskheta is the ancient capital of Georgia; it was built on the Mtkvari River and Aragvi River outfall.
Various historical sources have described Mtskheta as a highly developed political and cultural center of the Caucasus.
Several important temples and pantheons were built in Mtskheta, and the oldest trade route in Georgia ran just outside of the city. According to ancient Greek sources, Mtskheta was also said to have had a very well-developed water supply system. Additionally, there were several markets and stone houses used by the city's inhabitants.

The Christianization of Kartli was started in Mtsketa by St. Nino, one of Georgia's most famous saints. The Georgian architectural masterpiece, Svetitskhoveli Cathedral, was built in Mtskheta. Jvari Monastery, Armazi Castle and Samtavro Monastery, which are also in Mtskheta and the surrounding areas, are the some of Georgia's most important historical sites.
